I am excited to share a very special feature that I styled makeup for and was interviewed in April 2013’s issue of Ebony Magazine. The concept behind the beauty story was Bold Makeup For Every Age. Ebony invited me to share some of my tips and demonstrate them on 3 models: one in her 20s, one in her 40s and another in her 60s. I had a lot of fun accentuating each model’s beauty and finding ways to highlight her best features while addressing age-specific skin care and beauty needs.
Here is a play by play of the article, let me know what you think and if you have any tips of your own!
In Your 20s, Be a Mix Master
Youth is on your side, especially when it comes to trying an adventurous new look. Push the limits by wearing not one, but three saturated hues at once. “[Women] in this age group can definitely play up their eyes,” says makeup artist Johnny Gonzalez. Pair the look with a rosy shade on the lips.
In Your 40s, Try Tonal Color
Shake up a bland makeup routine by selecting a fresh-picked color such as tangerine for your eyes. Too over-the-top for you? Add a little smokiness with a violet shadow in the outer corner of your eyes. A hint of gold shadow adds a youthful glow. Complete the look with a nude lip in a soft peachy hue.
In Your 60s, Find the Perfect Accent
You may be considered “a woman of a certain age,” but that shouldn’t stop you from enhancing your best assets. “Women in their 60s start to lose the natural volume and definition in their lips,” Gonzalez says. “Red lips give the illusion of fullness.” He recommends using a liner, followed by lipstick, then topping off with gloss. This three-step layered approach ensures your color won’t migrate into any fine lines. Avoid makeup overload by limiting eye shadow to one shade.
